Lola Versus

Released in the UK as a spot of counter-programming to The Dark Knight - a move that suggests Twentieth Century Fox don't have a great deal of faith in it as an audience winner in a quieter week - Lola Versus' one saving grace is Greta Gerwig, who really deserves to be getting better, more grown up material at this point in her career.
She plays the eponymous, self-obsessed heroine who, after splitting up with her beau, spends the rest of the runtime learning that you don't need a man to make you happy. Essentially, this is Gerwig's natural charm versus her character and script's lack of it.
I wrote more about the film - and US indie romcom's unhealthy preoccupation with the quirky and the cynical - out at Tribeca Film Festival.
